Let’s do some simple, but awesome, science! This chemical reaction is safe for all ages and materials are easy to come by.
For this activity you will need the following items:
- A tray (tin, pie pan, glass dish, or anything with a lip)
- An empty spray bottle or turkey baster
- Vinegar
- Baking Soda
- Kool-Aid
- Glitter (for some added fun)
- Some sort of safety glasses. You’d hate to get vinegar in your eyes!
Now here’s what you do:
- Spread Kool-Aid (and glitter) over the bottom of the pan
- Spread a layer of baking soda over the Kool-Aid
- Put vinegar in a spray bottle or turkey baster
- Now- before you do the experiment, let’s ask the kiddos some questions…
- What do you smell? Where have you smelled it before?
- What do you see? What does it look like?
- What do you think will happen when we spray the vinegar on the baking soda?
- Write down their answers to refer to later.
- Let them spray the vinegar on the baking soda.
- More questions!
- What do you see?
- What do you smell?
- Did you think this would happen?
