Magic Balloons
Can you blow up a balloon with science? Try out this experiment and see!
For this activity you will need the following items:
- An empty water bottle
- A funnel
- A Balloon
- Vinegar
- Baking Soda
Now here’s what you do:
- First thing- make a hypothesis of what you think will happen when you mix baking soda and vinegar inside a balloon.
- What happens when baking soda and vinegar mix?
- What type of material is a balloon?
- Form your hypothesis first and then do the experiment.
- Using a funnel or a spoon, add 1Tablespoon of baking soda to the balloon. You may need help with this one!
- Pour ¼ Cup of vinegar into the empty water bottle. You can add food coloring to make it a little more fun.
- Carefully place the opening of the balloon over the opening of the water bottle. You want to make sure the mouth of the balloon is on the bottle securely.
- Now- ready? Lift the balloon up to pour the baking soda into the bottle.
- Observe and talk about what happened. What did you see? Hear? Smell?
- Now, go back to the first step. Was your hypothesis right?
Show us what you did! Post videos or pictures on social media to show us your experiment. We miss you and can’t wait to see you!
