Creating an obstacle course can seem like an overwhelming task, but once you learn a few tricks you won’t have any problems. This is a great way to get your kids moving inside or outside. Let them be a part of making the course! They may have some great ideas, too!
For this activity you could use the following items:
- Cones
- Chairs
- Hula Hoops
- Balls
- Pool Noodles
- Crepe paper
- Balloons
- Tape
- Chalk
- Timer or stop watch
- Use your imagination! What other items could you use? Couches, trees, etc…
Now here’s what you do:
- Every obstacle course has a start and a finish. Pick a starting point first. The finish line will be determined by the obstacles.
- To start, think about 4-5 different ways kids can move their bodies. Here are some ideas:
- Jumping
- Zig Zagging
- Crawling
- Running backwards
- Now, use the various materials above to create sections of the course. For example, you can put several hula hoops on the ground for the children to jump into. A good course has about 4-5 sections. But, that can always change based on your kiddos ability.
- Once the course is planned out, make sure the start and finish lines are defined. You can do this with tape or chalk on the ground.
- Before the race starts, walk through the course and demonstrate each section.
- Make sure only one child goes through the course at one time.
- Wanna make it a race? Use the stopwatch to time them and write it on a poster or with chalk on the ground. See if they can improve their times.
