This activity is STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) based and is great for any age. During this time of isolation, it can be difficult to play alone when your kids are used to playing with many children at school or daycare. This activity is not only great for their creativity, but it can be a way for your child to talk about their feelings.
For this activity you will need the following items:
- Some sort of “base”. We use pool noodles cut into 4-5 inch pieces. You can use:
- Styrofoam
- Cardboard pieces
- Plastic yogurt container
- TP or Paper Towel Tube
- Google eyes
- Pipe cleaners
- Feathers
- Stickers
- Yarn
- Paper
- Tape or glue
- What other materials will you use?
Now here’s what you do:
- Talk to your child about what it means to be a friend. What qualities does he or she think a friend should have? If they could create a new friend, what would they do together? What would their new friend look like? Would it be a monster? A dog? Another child?
- Talk about the materials and how to use them and connect them to their “base” or body.
- Make a creature with them! Talk about what and how you are using to make the creature’s body parts. What will you use for a mouth? Hair? Feet? Fins?
Don’t forget to show us what you create!
