Walking Rainbow
For this experiment you will need:
- 7 Plastic or glass cups (Something clear preferred)
- Paper Towels
- Food coloring in primary colors
- Most importantly, Water!
Here comes the fun part:
- The first thing you want to do is place 7 cups in a row and only pour water into every other cup–the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th. Fill your cups about ¾ full.
- Now for the food coloring. Add 5 drops of your red food coloring into the 1st and 7th cup.
- Add 5 drops of your yellow into the 3rd cup
- Add 5 drops of your blue into the 5th cup. These are all of the cups you have added water into.
- Take a half sheet of paper towel and fold it in half lengthwise and in half again lengthwise.
- Trim as much of the paper towel as needed to get it to fit perfectly between your cups.
- Place your paper towel in the first cup and the other end in the cup next to it. Continue this step with your paper towels in each cup until you make it basically like a train.
- Have your child predict what is going to happen.
See how the colors blend to make each color of the rainbow? Cool right!
Discuss the colors of the rainbow with your child, what makes a rainbow?
Let this sit for an hour or even overnight and see if there is any difference! Were your child’s predictions correct?
