Just like people, plants need water too! The colored water used in this experiment demonstrates how water is sucked through a plant’s stem and makes its way to the different parts of the plant. After you’re finished with this activity, you’ll have a colorful bouquet!
For this activity you will need the following items:
- White Flowers
- Glass Jars
- Scissors
- Food Coloring
- Water
Now here’s what you do:
- Pour water about halfway in each of the glass jars and then add a few drops of food coloring to each jar. The more coloring you add the deeper the color on the flower petals will be.
- Cut the flowers stems diagonally across the bottom so they can drink up the colored water easily. It is also important to make sure that the flowers are fresh. The experiment won’t work so well if the flowers are beginning to wilt.
- Place one flower into each jar of colored water (or more if you want!) and then watch as the flowers change color.
- After an hour or so you will start to see a little color appearing on the petals. After a few hours, the petals will all begin changing color. If you leave the flowers in the colored water overnight the color will continue to get deeper.
Show us your bright and colorful flowers! Which color is your favorite?
