Ornaments aren’t just for tree decorations, especially when they smell as good as these. Use this recipe to mix and make a gift for family or friends as a sweet-scented reminder of how much you love them!
For this activity you will need the following items:
-
- 1 cup ground cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp. ground allspice
- 2 Tbsp. ground nutmeg
- 1 cup applesauce
- 2 Tbsp. white glue
- drinking straw (or large diameter treat stick)
- ribbon or twine
- cookie cutters
- rolling pin
- wax paper
- magnets (optional)
Now here’s what you do:
-
- Mix cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, applesauce, and glue until well blended. The mixture will become stiff.
- Form the dough into a ball and place it on a sheet of wax paper. Let your little one roll out to a ¼” thick.
- Using cookie cutters, cut dough out in desired shapes.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 with leftover dough until you have used up as much dough as you can. There will be some left over you can use to make accent beads.
- For ornaments, use the straw to poke a hole at the top of your ornaments to thread the ribbon for hanging. If you’re making magnets, skip this step.
- Place ornaments on a flat surface to air dry; a cookie cooling rack works. Let them dry for 48-72 hours, turning them over halfway through the drying period.
- Once they are dry, thread the ribbon or twine through the hole and tie in a knot. If you choose to make magnets, place a self-adhesive magnet to the back.
This is a great family fun activity. What shapes will your family make? Who will you give this gift to? We’d love to see what you create– share with us on Facebook or Insta with #CMofILHomeFun
