Job Title: Summer Camp Counselor
Location: Children’s Museum of Illinois, 55 S. Country Club Rd., Decatur, IL 62521
Hours: 5 – 12 hours per week, May 25th, 2026 – July 31st, 2026
Hourly Rate: $17/hour when assisting, $20/hour when leading
Requirements: Must be comfortable working with children, leading a small group activity, and passing a background check.
About us: The Children’s Museum of Illinois is a hands-on, interactive museum for kids of all ages. On top of our physical exhibits, we also offer informal STEAM-based learning through programs like our summer camps. We offer half day camps for kids aged 4-5 and entering kindergarten through second grade. We also offer four day STEAM camps for kids entering third through fifth grade. About the role: This Summer Camp Counselor role will primarily assist with camps, but could occasionally lead an activity or a day. The curriculum is pre-planned, so no educational planning is required with this position. Each camp will be fully staffed with multiple counselors per day.
Responsibilities:
- While assisting, we ask for participation with the kids, classroom management assistance, and overall supervision, as well as monitoring museum free play.
- While leading, we ask for the ability to explain a project or concept to a small group of children, classroom management, and overall supervision, as well as monitoring check in/check out procedures.
- Must follow safety protocols.
What we’re looking for:
- Someone ready to have fun and make messes (and help clean them up).
- Someone responsible, patient, engaging, and communicative.
- Prior experience working with children.
- Flexibility and a willingness to change the plan last minute if needed.
- Teaching experience is not necessary, but is beneficial.
- Someone who will help foster an inclusive environment for all kids.
